The UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has opened an investigation into whether Microsoft misled personal and family customers in connection with changes to Microsoft 365 subscriptions. The regulator said it will examine the “extra costs” faced by subscribers after Microsoft added its AI assistant, Copilot, to Microsoft 365 plans.
According to the CMA, the probe focuses on how Microsoft sells and markets its subscription offerings, including whether customers were given accurate information about price increases and the Copilot bundling. The CMA announced the investigation on 29 July and is looking at the effect of the updated packages on consumer terms and expectations.
The CMA’s inquiry does not state wrongdoing. It is an assessment of the marketing and sale of the plans and whether the company’s representations and pricing changes could have misled customers. The investigation is ongoing and further findings would depend on the CMA’s review of relevant evidence and submissions.
