Former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming is expected to be named England’s Test coach following the sacking of Brendon McCullum, according to multiple reports. The BBC and Yahoo Sports both say Fleming is the expected successor. The Guardian adds that Fleming’s appointment follows a series of interviews with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) over the previous two weeks, and suggests he is likely to begin work on England’s tour of South Africa in December.
The Guardian also reports that Fleming is currently moving on from coaching roles in franchise cricket, after standing down as head coach of the IPL team Chennai Super Kings and its related sides, including Joburg Super Kings and Texas Super Kings, earlier this month. It notes that McCullum remains in charge of England’s white-ball teams and would continue in that role even as Fleming takes over responsibilities for Tests, with the two expected to work together in the transition period.
