A political and sporting controversy is unfolding after Hockey India unveils saffron-coloured jerseys to replace the traditional blue kit for India’s men’s and women’s national teams ahead of the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup in Belgium and the Netherlands. Hockey India says the new primary colour is inspired by the Indian flag and the “rising sun,” and is meant to symbolise “courage, sacrifice & victory” and “new beginnings,” while also retaining the national emblem, with tricolour detailing and subtle blue accents.
Former India captain Viren Rasquinha sharply criticises the decision, calling it “embarrassing” and arguing that blue has been closely associated with India’s hockey identity for decades and should remain the team’s primary symbol. His remarks gain traction online, with supporters expressing concern about moving away from the traditional colour and others defending the federation’s rationale.
Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also joins the dispute, saying changing uniforms and other efforts reflect attempts to alter or “rewrite” national identity and linking the debate to wider political discussions, including education policy. As the World Cup approaches, the new saffron jersey remains at the centre of both sports coverage and public debate.
