The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) warns election officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Borno State to avoid corrupt practices ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. The warning is issued by the ICPC Resident Anti-Corruption Commissioner for Borno and Yobe, Linus Gubbi, during a sensitisation workshop held in Maiduguri on Wednesday. The workshop is designed to promote integrity, accountability and transparency among electoral officers.
Gubbi says the credibility of elections depends on the character and compliance culture of those responsible for conducting them. He highlights ICPC’s mandate to prevent corruption and urges officials to uphold electoral procedures. He specifically lists key electoral offences, including result manipulation, abuse of office, collection of inducements, and failure to follow established guidelines. The ICPC warns that such actions undermine public trust, can heighten tensions and affect peace and development, and can lead to sanctions.
INEC officials, including Sadiq Grema (Head of Department, General Administration, INEC Borno), express appreciation for the training, which they say provides useful guidance. The ICPC also commends INEC’s Borno office for cooperation and calls for stronger collaboration.
