Abia State’s Structure for Signage and Advertising Agency (ABSSAA) has announced new outdoor advertising charges for political candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections. The agency says presidential candidates must pay N200 million to display campaign materials in the state, while governorship candidates pay N150 million. It also sets fees for other offices: N100 million for senatorial candidates, N50 million for House of Representatives candidates, and N20 million for State House of Assembly candidates. ABSSAA states the payments cover both the campaign and election periods and is unveiled at a stakeholders’ engagement forum in Aba. The agency warns it will dismantle or revoke unapproved billboards, especially those posing public-safety risks or threatening peace. ABSSAA and the Abia State Bureau of Strategic Communication say the policy applies equally to all political parties and is not meant to suppress any party’s visibility. However, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Abia State rejects the charges. ADC chairman Kalu Kalu argues the fees are excessive and may conflict with Electoral Act provisions on campaign expenditure limits and fair play. The development follows similar advertising levies in other states that have also drawn opposition concerns.
