According to reports, the theft occurs on the night of July 27 at the Sheetla Mata Temple and the Shiv Temple in the Maldhakka/Itwari area, under the jurisdiction of Lakadganj Police Station. The temple premises are reportedly locked the evening before, but when caretakers return the next morning, they find the main gate lock broken and the locks of the donation boxes forced open. Cash is missing from both shrines.
Multiple outlets report that CCTV footage shows the suspect entering late at night and making an apparent plea for forgiveness—hands folded in front of the deity—before proceeding with the theft. Some reports also describe the suspect damaging or interfering with cameras during the incident.
