Hong Kong’s anti-corruption agency, the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC), charges three former HSBC relationship managers over allegations that they accepted bribes to help customers open bank accounts without queuing. ICAC says the accused worked at an HSBC Causeway Bay branch at the time of the alleged offences. The individuals are Chan Fu-kwan, 32; Mike Chan Wai-pak, 29; and Bernie Yau Kai-lung, 33. According to the allegations described by both outlets, the assistance was provided to customers who were referred to the bank by an insurance agent. ICAC alleges that bribery was involved in connection with the expedited account-opening process, including helping customers “jump the queue.” The two reports state that the three men face multiple bribery-related charges, with one outlet specifying that they face a total of six bribery charges. The cases are at the charging stage, and the individuals have not been proven guilty. The allegations have been brought by ICAC as part of its investigation into suspected corruption involving bank account opening procedures.
