The UN Security Council has started the process of choosing the next UN secretary-general by conducting an initial “straw poll” to measure candidates’ support. While the straw poll is not binding, it provides an early indication of how much support each candidate may have before further consultations and negotiations take place. The process then moves through additional steps as the Security Council narrows its preferences and works toward reaching consensus on a nominee to recommend to the UN General Assembly.
