Spotify is adding a new “Running Mode” feature to its iOS app for Premium subscribers, launching first on iPhone. The feature is rolling out in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and Sweden. It appears in Spotify’s Fitness Hub.
Running Mode provides 25 curated running presets that users can tailor to their workout. Spotify lets users select a workout type (such as interval, steady, or pyramid), set a session duration, choose a target beats-per-minute (BPM), and indicate the kind of music they want. After users start playback, Spotify matches and sequences tracks to fit the selected tempo as the run progresses.
Spotify also includes optional audio cues intended to guide users during their runs. The cues are available in English, according to the reports. Spotify links the feature to its earlier fitness-focused “Prompted Playlists,” which use natural-language prompts for workout-related playback.
The rollout comes after Strava removed its in-app Spotify integration and related music controls late last month, though Spotify’s announcement does not directly attribute any changes to that move.
