Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde establishes a Judicial Commission of Inquiry to investigate the abduction of pupils and teachers from Esinele and Yawota (also reported as Yawata) communities in Oriire Local Government Area. The Commission is constituted by Makinde, and the state’s Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, announces the development in a statement from Ibadan. Sources report that the panel is inaugurated on Friday and includes an eight-member commission. The Commission’s mandate is to examine the circumstances leading to the May 15 kidnapping, including the events that enabled the security breach, and to assess the response of relevant authorities. It is also expected to identify factors that contributed to the incident and propose recommendations to strengthen school and community security to help prevent a recurrence. In reporting about the decision, Makinde also addresses allegations circulating against him, stating that the move to set up the inquiry is meant to dismiss claims that he was involved in orchestrating the abduction. The kidnapping involved pupils and teachers who were reportedly held captive for about 56 days before they were eventually rescued.
