Two new studies by climate researchers using rapid “attribution” methods find that human-caused climate change increases the likelihood of the extreme weather conditions that help trigger large wildfires in Spain and France. The studies focus on fire-weather factors such as heat, dryness and wind that create conditions for fire spread. In Spain—described across reports as having a record-sized blaze—the research concludes that human-driven warming makes the relevant hot and dry conditions at least around 20 times more likely than they would be without climate change. For France, the studies conclude that climate change roughly doubles the chances of the extreme fire-weather conditions observed in the affected period. Several outlets report that the analysis is conducted while fires were still burning, and cite the World Weather Attribution approach. Collectively, the coverage says the “fingerprints” of climate change are visible in the meteorological conditions associated with the wildfires and that warming over recent decades has raised the odds of severe fire-weather in parts of southern Europe.
