OpenAI is lowering prices for parts of its GPT-5.6 model lineup as competition increases from US rival Anthropic and from lower-cost Chinese AI providers. In posts on social media, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman signals that the company is willing to price models more aggressively to defend its market position.
Altman says OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Sol is already priced at about half the cost of Anthropic’s Claude Fable 5, and adds that OpenAI is prepared to deliver some offerings at one-quarter of Anthropic’s price. In a separate announcement, Altman also describes an 80% reduction in developer pricing for a lightweight GPT-5.6 Luna model, which would reduce API costs to about US$0.20 per million input tokens.
Across the reports, OpenAI’s moves are framed as a response to faster advances by competitors offering cheaper options, including Chinese alternatives. Both accounts describe the changes as developer-focused API price adjustments rather than a general statement about pricing for all products.
