Kenneth Okonkwo says he never defamed Peter Obi amid defamation suit

Kenneth Okonkwo, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has sharply criticised Peter Obi, the 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), calling him a “compulsive liar” determined to destroy rising stars from the South-East.Okonkwo made the remarks on Friday while featuring on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily. He was responding to Obi’s defamation suit against him.     He insisted he never defamed Obi and accused the former Anambra governor of displaying little knowledge of the law. Okonkwo urged Obi’s legal team to better educate him on defamation matters.“Peter Obi is a classless, non-charismatic politician with little knowledge and zero depth. Look at the lie he just told,” Okonkwo said.     He argued that Obi’s suit was legally flawed because defamation applies to statements already made, not intended future statements. Okonkwo claimed his own remarks are publicly available on his social media handles for verification.“What I said is on my X handle... I did not say anything whether it would destroy him or not,” he explained, adding that Obi had already initiated legal action before his latest comments.     Okonkwo further accused Obi of lying both legally and factually. He referenced similar criticisms from others, including Minister of Aviation Festus Keyamo, who described Obi as lying “like a fish drinks water,” and asked why Obi had not sued them.“Minister of Aviation has called him a compulsive liar and unfortunately, I agree with him on that because he has lied against me openly and has displayed very little knowledge. His lawyers should educate him,” Okonkwo added.    The exchange highlights the growing rift between the two South-East political figures, who were once allies.
