Chelsea are fined £10 million by the Football Association (FA) for breaches of rules on payments to agents covering the period from 2009 to 2022. The FA says the club admitted breaching its agent regulations and self-reported 74 breaches when Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital took over the club in 2022. According to the FA’s findings, Chelsea made £47 million in undisclosed payments to unregistered agents and third parties connected to player transfers completed between 2011 and 2018.
Alongside the fine, Chelsea are given a suspended two-window transfer ban. Multiple outlets report that an earlier independent commission had imposed a suspended six-point deduction, but that sanction is set aside on appeal. Instead, the suspended transfer ban is imposed. Reports also note that Chelsea’s admissions relate to agent-related payments made during previous ownership arrangements.
The punishment is described as suspended, meaning it would only take effect if relevant conditions are triggered, while the fine is part of the FA’s announced disciplinary outcome.
