Delta State provides ₦2m grants, monthly stipends to 86 repatriated returnees from South Africa

Delta State announced ₦2 million grants, monthly stipends, free healthcare and trauma counselling for 86 indigenes repatriated from South Africa.

The Delta State Government has unveiled a comprehensive support package for 86 indigenes repatriated from South Africa following recent xenophobic attacks. Each affected family will receive ₦2 million and monthly stipends until the end of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s first tenure.The announcement was made on Friday at the Unity Hall, Government House, Asaba, by the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Johnson Erijo, who represented Governor Oborevwori during the reception for the returnees.Erijo explained that individuals among the returnees would receive ₦200,000 monthly, while families would get ₦300,000 monthly, beginning in August 2026. He added that the state would provide free medical screening and trauma counselling through the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Services.Quoting the governor, Erijo said:“We watched with dismay the xenophobic attacks targeted at fellow Africans in South Africa. No human being deserves to be beaten, displaced or forced to live in fear because of his nationality. My heart is heavy with pain for the indignity you endured, yet full of gratitude to God and to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whose swift intervention ensured your safe repatriation.”He urged families and communities to welcome the returnees with love, describing such solidarity as “the true Delta spirit.”The Commissioner for Special Duties, Etacherure Terry, revealed that the governor approved contingency funds after the State Emergency Management Agency exhausted its allocation, ensuring every returnee was identified, documented, and supported.Returnees expressed gratitude for the intervention. Jacob Agbada from Isoko North described life in South Africa during the attacks as traumatic, advising Nigerians to reconsider migrating there. Another returnee, Saturday Akanuche, said the support had restored his hope:“I never expected this. With this money, I can start life again and open a small business. I had almost lost hope, but now I dare to move on.”The initiative, according to the state government, is aimed at helping victims rebuild their lives and reaffirming Delta’s commitment to protecting its citizens.
