NASA reports that the Curiosity rover spends the week climbing through layered sedimentary rocks on Mount Sharp and studying the “rock record” preserved in the strata. Across sols 4961 to 4967, the rover continues upward along the sequence, examining targets selected by the science team to characterize the materials and transitions between rock layers.

Both NASA’s project update and Phys.org describe that Curiosity reaches a specific layer where the team had previously identified a possible “erosional supersurface.” This candidate boundary is based on a combination of orbital observations and imagery of nearby buttes, which suggested an erosion-related disruption in the continuity of the sedimentary record. The current rover observations are presented as an opportunity to test that interpretation by directly examining the exposed rock at the suspected boundary.
