Major record labels, including Universal Music Group, Sony Music, and Warner Music Group, propose new rules for whether AI-generated or AI-assisted songs qualify for official music charts. According to the reports, the labels would exclude such tracks from chart eligibility unless they meet specific conditions, including being “substantially human made” and clearly labeled for AI involvement. The proposal is described as going beyond earlier industry efforts focused mainly on labeling, including a labeling-oriented approach associated with the RIAA and the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), as well as other groups.
The labels’ framework also ties eligibility to legal and technical requirements. It calls for songs to comply with the terms of service of the AI tools used and to ensure rights are held for any data used to train the models. The proposal further includes a requirement that tracks not raise concerns about stream or chart manipulation. While the criteria are not fully defined—such as what counts as “substantially human made”—the proposal is supported by the IFPI. No charting organization has indicated immediate plans to adopt the rules.
