OpenAI says it has surpassed the milestone of 1 billion active users across its artificial intelligence products. The company made the announcement in a blog post, stating that its models now reach more than one billion active users and more than two million businesses. OpenAI credits rising confidence in the technology for increased use and deeper engagement.
The milestone comes less than four years after the launch of ChatGPT, OpenAI’s widely used chatbot, first released to consumers in November 2022. OpenAI, founded in 2015, now counts activity across multiple interfaces, primarily ChatGPT, but also Codex (its AI model for programming assistance) and ChatGPT Work, a platform that helps users access external applications.
Reporting cited by the sources indicates OpenAI initially expected to reach the 1 billion figure earlier this year after reaching 900 million weekly active users in late February. The company’s progress is described as occurring amid growing competition from other AI rivals. The announcement is also framed against how quickly other major technology services reached similar user levels.
