Anthropic and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announce a four-year partnership worth $200 million, combining grant funding, Claude AI usage credits, and technical support. The collaboration is intended to support programs across global health, life sciences, education, and economic mobility, with an emphasis on areas where markets alone are not expected to deliver sufficient benefits.
Reuters reports that language accessibility is one focus. Anthropic and the foundation plan to support improved data collection and labeling for training AI systems to better write and translate dozens of African languages, and to make some resulting datasets publicly available to help improve models across the industry.
The foundation also discusses the potential release of “knowledge graphs” designed to help AI systems address educational needs, including for teachers in sub-Saharan Africa and India. Public-goods efforts aim to reduce concerns among partners and governments about proprietary lock-in and sovereignty.
An initiative described by the parties includes equipping research centers to use Claude to help predict drug candidates related to conditions including HPV and preeclampsia, which are described as less commercially attractive for pharmaceutical R&D.
