Multiple reports say a spent SpaceX Falcon 9 upper stage—left in orbit after the Jan. 15, 2025 Firefly Blue Ghost-1 launch—has a predicted trajectory that brings it to the Moon on Aug. 5, 2026. The stage is expected to strike the lunar surface near the Einstein and Bell craters, toward the western lunar limb. Coverage also notes that the Jan. 15, 2025 mission carried ispace’s Hakuto-R Mission 2 robotic lander, called Resilience.

An international research team led by William Jo of the University of Texas at Austin has published a study using physics simulations to estimate impact dynamics and potential observability from Earth. The simulations describe the upper stage mass at about 3,900 kg and an impact speed of roughly 2.43 km/s. Researchers project that the resulting ejecta plume could briefly be significantly brighter than the dark-sky background for the first few minutes after impact, with the central ejecta spike reaching on the order of 75–100 km altitude (and ejecta curtain structures lower). The brightness and plume extent are modeled for a nominal scenario, with the expectation that real conditions may differ. Scientists say the event could help calibrate models used to plan future lunar missions and assess risks from discarded rocket hardware.
