Salihu Lukman, a former chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), says Nigerians have lost confidence in opposition political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections. Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, Lukman links the declining confidence to divisions among opposition groups, arguing that they have not united to present a viable presidential candidate. He says the situation raises the risk of opposition candidates contesting only to face what he describes as “coronation” rather than meaningful competition.
Lukman also argues that confidence in the electoral process is low, which he says increases the likelihood of voter apathy. He warns that voter apathy can create conditions for higher incidences of election manipulation and rigging. In his view, rigging is influenced by the resources parties control, and he points to vote buying as an indicator of the broader problem.
