The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registers an FIR against Reliance Capital Ltd., its former chairman Anil D. Ambani, and unnamed public servants and other unidentified persons in connection with an alleged Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) investment fraud, involving ₹1,816.22 crore, officials say. The FIR is registered on July 31 and is based on a complaint received by the CBI. The complaint is filed by or routed through the EPFO under the Ministry of Labour and Employment, and alleges cheating, criminal conspiracy, and causing wrongful loss to the EPFO.
According to the complaint cited by multiple outlets, EPFO investments made during 2013 and 2014 were linked to secured Non-Convertible Debentures (NCDs) issued by Reliance Capital. The EPFO invested ₹2,500 crore through portfolio managers, and the NCDs were scheduled to mature in 2023 and 2024. The complaint alleges that the accused diverted invested funds through fraudulent transactions, and that Reliance Capital failed to redeem the NCDs on maturity, resulting in an alleged loss of ₹1,816.22 crore. Reported components include a wrongful loss of ₹1,007.55 crore and an interest liability of ₹808.67 crore. The FIR also seeks to identify the roles of those involved and trace the use of the funds.
