Former APC deputy national publicity secretary Timi Frank calls on President Bola Tinubu to heed warnings issued by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria. In a statement released in Abuja, Frank says the bishops show “courage” by confronting the President with the realities of Nigeria’s economic and political challenges. He praises the bishops for speaking directly to Tinubu on issues including economic hardship and concerns about the country’s democratic future.
Frank urges Tinubu to take the bishops’ observations seriously, arguing that acting on their recommendations could help restore public confidence in the administration. He also calls on other religious leaders—both Christian and Muslim—to speak more openly on matters affecting Nigerians rather than limiting engagements with government officials to prayers or ceremonial visits. According to Frank, religious leaders have a moral obligation to hold those in authority accountable, particularly as many Nigerians face economic hardship and insecurity.
The Catholic bishops’ conference has previously raised concerns through engagements with different administrations, including insecurity, governance and corruption, and protecting democratic institutions. In recent interactions with Tinubu, the bishops reportedly urged the government to address worsening living conditions, strengthen democratic institutions, and guard against actions that could undermine Nigeria’s multi-party democracy.
