PDP condemns attack on defector and journalists in Ebonyi ahead of 2027 polls

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State has condemned an attack on Barrister Ifeanyi Nworie, a former All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain who recently defected, along with his supporters and journalists.The incident occurred on Saturday at Idembia in Ezza South Local Government Area of the state.The party alleged that agents and appointees of the APC-led Ebonyi State Government carried out the attacks. It also claimed that PDP supporters and members have faced threats from the same sources in recent weeks ahead of the 2027 general elections.According to the PDP, the attackers were led by a former member of the House of Representatives, senior state government officials, an ex-PDP chairman of Ezza South Local Government, and others.At a press briefing in Abakaliki on Saturday night, state PDP chairman Chukwuma Igwe said vehicles were damaged and several people assaulted with dangerous weapons. He added that eight persons are currently receiving treatment in hospital.Igwe described the incident as an undemocratic action aimed at undermining the conduct of the 2027 elections in Ebonyi State.He called on security agencies to protect all citizens and ensure their rights to freedom of association and political participation.“We state unequivocally that the PDP in Ebonyi State will not be intimidated by undemocratic forces, irrespective of who may be behind them,” Igwe said.He urged party members to remain peaceful and law-abiding, and called on the state government to respect democratic norms. He further appealed to the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Armed Forces and other security agencies to maintain impartiality and ensure a level playing field for all political parties.
