A new clinical trial reports that adults with central obesity can reduce body fat and improve cardiovascular fitness with a “once-a-week” exercise routine. Researchers studied 315 participants who have excess fat around the waist and followed a four-month intervention. One group completed 75 minutes of brisk interval walking in a single weekly session, while another group performed the same total amount of exercise split across three days per week. Across the study period, the once-weekly group shows reductions in overall body fat and waist measurements, along with improvements in cardiovascular fitness. The magnitude of these changes is reported to be similar to the group that exercises three times weekly. The findings suggest that, for this population, concentrating a moderate volume of brisk interval walking into one weekly workout can produce benefits comparable to spreading the same workload across multiple shorter sessions. The results are based on measured changes in body composition, waist size, and fitness indicators over the four-month study duration.
