Chris Emejuru, a public affairs analyst and Action Democratic Party (ADP) chieftain, criticises President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms, saying they are worsening living conditions for many Nigerians. In a statement titled “Nigeria at a Crossroads,” Emejuru argues that measures including the removal of fuel subsidy and the floating of the naira were implemented with good intentions but have deepened hardship. He says the increase in petrol prices affects costs across key areas such as food, rent and transportation, pushing more people into poverty. The reports also cite the exchange rate, described as hovering around ₦1,400 to the dollar, as a major challenge for households and businesses, including families seeking to travel or pay school fees and businesses that import goods. Emejuru acknowledges that the reforms may have reduced bottlenecks and boosted investor confidence, but he says ordinary Nigerians have seen little day-to-day improvement. He suggests reforms should have been carried out gradually with safety nets and calls for measures such as affordable transport, agricultural support and housing incentives. He also recommends reconsidering aspects of currency policy and improving tax reforms to better support small businesses.
