A coalition of 100 prominent Nigerians, known as G-100, calls on opposition parties to unite behind a single presidential candidate for the 2027 election. In a seven-page open letter titled “The Doctrine of a Necessary Democratic Opposition,” dated August 2, 2026, the group warns that fragmentation within the opposition poses risks to Nigeria’s democracy and political institutions. The letter urges leading opposition figures to set aside personal ambitions and negotiate a common front to provide voters with a credible alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
G-100 says Nigeria cannot be “rescued” by opposition leaders who campaign separately toward the same outcome. It argues that democratic survival depends on the ability of citizens to peacefully challenge and, if necessary, replace government through a unified opposition.
The coalition plans to convene a National Council of Opposition Leaders within two weeks, expecting participation from figures including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and Rotimi Amaechi, among others. The meeting is also set to reaffirm the Ibadan Declaration of April 2026 as a basis for coordinating an opposition strategy.
