A humpback whale found dead off the Danish coast near the island of Anholt is identified as “Timmy,” the same whale that was stranded along Germany’s Baltic Sea coast and became the focus of rescue efforts, according to multiple reports. Danish authorities say they can confirm the whale near Anholt is the same individual previously stranded in Germany and subject to rescue attempts. In Germany, the whale had been spotted stuck on sandbanks in late March and endured several failed attempts before a rescue operation succeeded. Two weeks after that German rescue, divers in Denmark confirm the dead humpback is “Timmy.” Reports also note that earlier it was not immediately clear whether the Danish whale was the same one. Denmark then carried out checks to establish the identity of the animal. The findings mean the whale’s condition has changed since the German operation, and officials now treat the Danish discovery as the death of the previously rescued humpback.
