India’s average total organisational cost of a data breach reaches a record ₹25.5 crore in 2026, according to an IBM report cited by multiple outlets. The figure represents a 15.9% rise compared with the previous year. The report also points to larger breach impact: the average number of records compromised in India increases to about 39,500 in 2026 (up from about 38,200 in 2025).

The IBM findings highlight the growing role of artificial intelligence in cyberattacks. Nearly 26% of malicious breaches are described as AI-generated, with AI making attacks faster, more sophisticated and scalable. At the same time, organisations that deploy AI and security automation more extensively are reported to experience lower breach costs and quicker response than those that use no AI.

The reporting further notes that organisations without AI and security automation take longer—on average 236 days to identify a breach and 75 days to contain it—while AI- and automation-heavy users respond faster. Phishing is identified as the most common initial attack vector, with other frequently cited routes including drive-by compromise and supply-chain compromise.
