Tamil Nadu has moved the Supreme Court seeking directions to Karnataka to release Cauvery river water, alleging that Karnataka is not complying with existing orders. The Tamil Nadu government’s application cites a July 30 decision by the Central Cauvery Water Management authority framework, which directs Karnataka to release 3,500 cusecs of water for 15 days from its reservoirs at Kabini and Krishna Raja Sagara. Tamil Nadu contends that Karnataka has failed to follow the orders of the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) and the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC). The move indicates that Tamil Nadu wants the court to ensure compliance with the regulator’s decision on releases and prevent further shortfall. The request centers on implementation of the specified quantity and duration of releases from the two reservoirs, in line with the authority’s ruling. The Supreme Court petition is presented against the backdrop of the ongoing Cauvery water dispute between the states, with Tamil Nadu asserting non-compliance and seeking judicial intervention.
