President Cyril Ramaphosa has authorised South Africa’s Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to investigate allegations relating to procurement and administration in two areas. The SIU probe covers nine contracts connected to the establishment of the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality’s municipal police service. The investigations are prompted by claims of maladministration, irregular expenditure, and possible unlawful conduct tied to how the contracts are handled.
In addition, Ramaphosa has also directed the SIU to investigate a tender issued by the Gauteng Department of Health for a voluntary medical male circumcision programme. The probe similarly relates to allegations that the tender process and related spending may have involved maladministration, irregularities, or conduct that could be unlawful.
The authorisation formalises SIU work into the specified contracts and the health-sector tender, with the aim of determining whether any wrongdoing occurred and whether legal consequences follow for those implicated. The action follows public and political scrutiny of municipal and provincial procurement processes.
