Lucy Dacus releases her cover of “Clay Pigeons,” adding to the growing set of tributes to Texas songwriter Blaze Foley. Foley, who is known as an influential but relatively little-recognized figure in his lifetime, is shot dead in 1989 at age 39. In the years since, his music has continued to attract major artists and prompt tribute projects, including songs such as Lucinda Williams’ “Drunken Angel” and a 2018 biopic, Blaze, directed by and starring Ethan Hawke.
The new tribute album, Sittin’ With Blaze, is scheduled for release Friday, August 7. Multiple outlets report that the compilation includes Foley covers by a range of artists. Among those participating are Phosphorescent and Lucinda Williams, along with Willie Watson, Cactus Lee, Dylan Earl, Uncle Lucius, Riley Downing, and others. Dacus’s contribution features her interpretation of Foley’s “Clay Pigeons” ahead of the album’s full release.
