Hana Financial Group says its affiliate Hana Bank is buying a stake in Dunamu, the operator of South Korea’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, Upbit. Hana Bank acquires 6.55% of Dunamu for about 1 trillion won (roughly $667–$670 million) by purchasing 2.284 million shares from Kakao Investment, according to Hana’s disclosures. After the transaction, Hana Bank becomes Dunamu’s fourth-largest shareholder.

Korea Times reports Hana Bank’s board approves the purchase, describing it as the largest investment by a Korean commercial bank in a single digital asset company. Bloomberg similarly characterizes the deal as part of signs that South Korea’s banks are increasingly engaging with digital assets.

The companies frame the purchase as a strategic partnership that goes beyond existing cooperation such as real-name account services for virtual asset transactions. Sources also link the move to broader industry efforts toward blockchain infrastructure and stablecoin-related financial services. The announcement comes as South Korean regulators have pushed crypto exchange operators to reduce major shareholders’ stakes to strengthen financial soundness and accountability.
