Major League Soccer says it is investigating reported antisemitic and discriminatory language directed at New England Revolution striker Dor Turgeman during the teams’ MLS match against CF Montréal in Montreal on Saturday. The Revolution said Turgeman, an Israeli player, was subjected to verbal abuse after he scored in the 35th minute of a 2-2 draw. The club said it reported the incident to the league and is fully supporting the investigation.
The Guardian reports that broadcast microphones captured fans chanting “free Palestine” shortly before Turgeman scored, and the Revolution has condemned the chants as antisemitic and discriminatory. MLS confirmed on Monday that it is aware of the reported comments and that the matter is being reviewed.
While the accounts describe chants and other verbal abuse aimed at the player, the allegations have not been resolved publicly. MLS’s investigation will determine what occurred and whether any league rules were breached.
