SK hynix and SanDisk introduce what they describe as the first industry standards for high-bandwidth flash (HBF), a storage technology intended to increase data transfer rates for artificial intelligence (AI) inference. Both outlets say the standards are presented at the Future of Memory and Storage (FMS) 2026 exhibition in California, taking place Tuesday through Thursday local time. The companies plan to showcase the work through keynote and panel sessions, including remarks by SK hynix executives on the opening day.
HBF is positioned as a component that sits between high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and traditional storage such as solid-state drives (SSDs). The aim is to provide bandwidth substantially higher than SSDs while preserving the large capacity associated with NAND flash. The effort comes about six months after SK hynix and SanDisk formed a consortium, and additional ecosystem participation is mentioned, including companies such as Google and Tenstorrent. Across coverage, the standards are framed as a response to AI “memory bottlenecks,” where faster movement of inference data is needed as workloads grow.
