A new study finds that the Tapanuli orangutan (Pongo tapanuliensis), described as the world’s rarest great ape, is endangered by several overlapping pressures in North Sumatra, Indonesia. Sources report that fewer than 800 individuals remain, and the species is restricted to the Batang Toru ecosystem. That same forest landscape also supports other rare or threatened wildlife, including Sumatran tigers, Sunda pangolins, agile gibbons and helmeted hornbills.

The study highlights that threats do not act alone. It points to extractive industries, logging, and agricultural expansion as major drivers of habitat degradation and loss. In addition, it says climate-related disasters are increasingly affecting the orangutan’s environment, adding further stress to a small, localized population. The combined effects of land-use change and climate impacts are presented as worsening conditions for the species’ survival.
