Gatwick Airport’s planned second runway expansion is moving ahead after a legal challenge is dismissed, allowing the project to proceed toward later stages. According to reports, the Court of Appeal rejects a bid by campaigners seeking to overturn a High Court ruling made in June that the scheme could go ahead.
The expansion, described as a £2.2 billion project, had already been formally approved by Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander in September 2025. With the latest court decision ending the latest attempt to block the project, the airport and developers are expected to move into the next phase of delivery.
Multiple outlets frame the development as the project taking “one step closer” to construction after the failure of the second challenge. The reporting indicates that campaigners’ legal efforts have not succeeded in stopping the scheme, meaning the runway expansion can continue within the regulatory and planning framework already approved by government.
