Italy’s largest bank, Intesa Sanpaolo, increases its exposure to crypto via staked Ether while reducing holdings in spot Bitcoin ETFs, according to recent reporting. In the second quarter, the bank triples its position in the iShares Staked Ethereum Trust ETF, raising the value of its staked Ether ETF holdings to about $7.1 million. At the same time, Intesa Sanpaolo cuts its stake in iShares Bitcoin ETF (IBIT) by about 94% during the quarter. CoinDesk also reports that total bitcoin ETF holdings across the bank fall, citing a 35% decline to roughly $69.3 million. Additional coverage indicates the bank reduces holdings in two spot Bitcoin ETFs, not only IBIT. The changes are linked to market conditions during the quarter, when crypto prices slump, but the reported actions focus on the bank’s shifting ETF allocations—moving from spot Bitcoin exposure toward a larger share in staked Ether. The reports do not attribute the trades to any stated strategy beyond the disclosed changes in holdings.
