MAD has completed Shenzhen Bay Culture Square, a new design museum in Houhai, Shenzhen’s Nanshan District, presented as both a cultural venue and a public coastal space. Multiple outlets describe the building as a series of stone-like, boulder-inspired volumes made from white granite-like forms. These galleries sit on an undulating green roof that extends across the site, creating a landscape-like setting intended to blend the structure into the area’s shoreline character.
According to the descriptions, the design includes walkable green-roof areas that allow city residents to access parts of the museum complex outdoors, rather than treating the building as a strictly enclosed facility. The museum is positioned along Shenzhen Bay, and its form is designed to reinforce that coastal terrain effect, with the sculpted roof and stepped, rock-like masses shaping how the complex is experienced from surrounding public areas.
