Roxanne Tickle, a transgender woman, wins a discrimination case against the women-only social media app Giggle for Girls and its founder, Sall Grover. The reports say Tickle was denied access to the platform and took the matter to court. An August 2024 finding determined that her exclusion amounted to unlawful discrimination on the basis of gender identity. On appeal, a federal court upholds that conclusion and increases the damages. The Guardian reports the court’s judgment is delivered on 15 May by justices Melissa Perry, Wendy Abraham and Geoffrey Kennett, affirming the earlier finding and addressing Tickle’s cross-appeal, which alleges two instances of direct discrimination by the app and its founder. BBC News and other outlets report that damages are doubled to AU$40,000. The Age, Brisbane Times and Sydney Morning Herald also describe the litigation as being filed after Tickle was blocked from using the app. The court’s decision leaves the increased financial award in place following review.
