Brisbane is outlining plans to limit long-term “white elephant” assets after the Olympics by using temporary infrastructure and technology during the Games. Multiple outlets report that the city will guide large numbers of Olympic visitors through the experience using “overlay” technology, which adds digital layers to support wayfinding and engagement. The approach is intended to enhance how fans move through venues and related sites during the event without requiring permanent additions.
In addition to digital tools, Brisbane is also planning pop-up facilities that operate during the Olympic period and then close or dismantle afterward. The concept is that these temporary installations will provide services or experiences needed for peak demand during the Games, but will not remain as underused assets once the event ends.
All reporting characterizes the blueprint as a deliberate effort to ensure that facilities and features deployed for the Olympics are either reusable or designed to be removed, so the city is not left with costly, vacant infrastructure after the Games.
