Microsoft tells engineers to reduce excessive spending on AI “tokens” used by coding and development tools, according to an internal memo from executive vice president Jay Parikh. Parikh says the company is not optimizing for “tokenmaxxing,” and instead wants employees to focus on outcomes and business impact from AI coding assistance such as GitHub Copilot.

The memo, reported by multiple outlets, also describes operational changes. Microsoft makes OpenAI’s cheaper GPT-5.6 the default internal model for employees using internal AI systems. It further sets division-level AI token budget targets starting in July 2026, and updates internal guidance on managing token usage.

Employees receive dashboards to monitor their own token spend on GitHub Copilot, and the guidance indicates that many engineers spend from hundreds of dollars per month up to a few thousand, with some reportedly spending far more. The documents say Microsoft is applying “discipline” to token spend like other critical resources, while continuing to develop its “AI-first” approach and adjusting policies as models and products evolve.
