African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice presidential candidate Rotimi Amaechi responds to remarks by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, who has said that Atiku Abubakar picked him as running mate because of money. In an interview on Channels Television’s “Politics Today” on Tuesday, Amaechi says he does not “respond to [his] subordinate” and adds that Wike did not hire him. He says that after mourning and when he begins campaigning, he will respond directly to insults.
The two outlets report that Wike made additional comments during a media meeting with selected journalists on Tuesday, including that Amaechi does not have political value in Rivers State. Amaechi’s response is framed as a rejection of both the characterization of his selection and the assessment of his political standing in Rivers.
The reports also note the political background to the dispute: Amaechi previously stood as a presidential candidate for the ADC but lost to Atiku Abubakar in the party’s primaries. After the primaries, the ADC announced Amaechi as Atiku’s running mate ahead of the 2027 general elections.
