Will Lawrence, a progressive climate organizer and co-founder of the Sunrise Movement, is projected to win the Democratic primary for Michigan’s 7th Congressional District. The race is a three-way contest in the district based around Lansing, with results reported by Decision Desk HQ as Lawrence’s victory. Lawrence defeats former U.S. ambassador Bridget Brink, who is backed by former Democratic Michigan governors Jennifer Granholm and Jim Blanchard, as well as Matt Maasdam, a former U.S. Navy Seal and military aide to Barack Obama.
Multiple outlets describe Lawrence as an environmental activist who has emphasized policies such as a datacenter moratorium. He has also been associated with Sunrise Movement efforts that helped advance broader climate and economic proposals, including the Green New Deal.
With the Democratic nomination secured, Lawrence is set to face incumbent Republican Rep. Tom Barrett in November’s general election. The primary win positions Lawrence as the progressive challenger in the fall contest against Barrett.
