Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) presidential candidate Donald Duke criticizes Nigeria’s Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project, arguing the country cannot afford it and that it will not deliver practical benefits. Speaking on Arise Television’s “Prime Time” on Tuesday, Duke says the project is “unnecessary” and unlikely to extend beyond Epe. He also claims it could be more focused on land reclamation than on essential transport infrastructure. Duke argues that Nigeria already has a road connection between Lagos and Calabar and that government should prioritize repairs and upgrades to existing routes rather than funding a new and costly highway. He further contends that public spending is misallocated, with insufficient funding for basic services. In his remarks, Duke points to Nigeria’s low capital budget allocations for health—citing ₦36 million last year—and describes it as inadequate. He also highlights what he presents as chronic underfunding in education, and says resources devoted to the highway could be better used for electricity, healthcare, and other essential services.
