Osun State is challenging the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) freezing of a state government bank account, with Governor Ademola Adeleke directing the state’s Attorney-General to pursue legal action. Multiple reports say the EFCC issued a “Post No Debit” directive affecting an Osun State Government account domiciled with First Bank, in Osogbo. Osun officials describe the measure as unlawful and argue that the EFCC can investigate but cannot freeze state government funds without a court order.
Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice Oluwole Jimi-Bada announces that the state will approach the Federal High Court to contest the EFCC action. The state says the freeze could disrupt government operations. The reports also cite claims by Osun’s Commissioner for Finance, Sola Ogungbile, that police officers stormed the First Bank branch and arrested staff members, an allegation the EFCC action has prompted. Governor Adeleke has previously described the freezing plans as an attempt to hinder governance ahead of an August 15 governorship election, and says state resources are not being used for his campaign.
