The family of detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu says the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) are harassing Kanu’s independent physicians. In a statement issued by Prince Emmanuel Kanu on behalf of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and the Okwu-Kanu family of Umuahia, Abia State, the family alleges that the doctors are being targeted despite medical issues said to be pending before the Court of Appeal.
The family claims that while Kanu was in DSS custody, his health was mismanaged, citing dangerously low potassium levels, poorly controlled hypertension, renal impairment, and untreated cardiac abnormalities. It says Kanu’s condition improved after intervention by his personal physician, Emeritus Professor Dr. Martin Aghaji, and his team.
According to the allegations, the DSS lodged a complaint with the MDCN accusing Prof. Aghaji of unethical practices for adjusting Kanu’s medications. The family also says another doctor, Dr. Charles Ndukwu, has been summoned before an MDCN investigation panel. The family describes the steps as a coordinated effort to silence independent medical witnesses and argues that intimidation could affect evidence related to Kanu’s pending appeal.
