Rolling, one-hour power outages affect millions in the Philippines, starting in parts of Manila and spreading across the main island of Luzon, according to reporting from multiple outlets. The outages begin mid-afternoon and are scheduled to extend further from Luzon to the central islands.
The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) says the interruptions are linked to “major grid disruptions” that affect transmission lines. In addition, a maintenance shutdown involving several major power plants is cited as a contributing factor by the NGCP and the Department of Energy.
The outages are described as widespread, with electricity disruptions occurring in multiple areas rather than a single locality. Authorities and grid operators frame the outages as temporary and scheduled in intervals, rather than a total and permanent loss of power.
