Kerala’s General Education Department launches the “Aquafit” programme to train school students in swimming skills, beginning with a first phase that targets 14,000 students across the state. The programme is inaugurated by General Education Minister N. Samsudheen at the Jimmy George Aquatic Complex in Thiruvananthapuram, as part of the government’s 100-day action plan.

Under the initiative, the training is planned on a district-by-district basis, with 1,000 students selected from each of Kerala’s 14 districts. Students are chosen from schools and trained at swimming pools located within a five-kilometre radius of their schools, supported by local self-government institutions and other relevant departments.

The government describes swimming skills as both a sport and a life-saving ability, citing the presence of rivers, canals and other water bodies across Kerala. Officials say the programme aims to improve physical fitness, strengthen awareness of water safety, help reduce drowning incidents, and potentially identify and nurture talented swimmers. State Health Minister K. Muraleedharan presides over the launch event, while Sports and Youth Affairs Minister O. J. Janish is the chief guest.
