A peer-reviewed study from UC San Diego’s Shiley Eye Institute reports that using an Apple Vision Pro as a wearable display during an endoscopic tear-duct procedure can improve surgical efficiency compared with using a traditional monitor across the room. The research, published in AJO International, evaluates 32 surgeries to address blocked tear ducts. In half the cases, surgeons wore Vision Pro headsets that stream the endoscopic video feed directly into their field of view, allowing them to maintain a forward-facing posture rather than looking at a distant screen. In that group, the average operative time is 34.4 minutes, compared with 42.7 minutes when surgeons used the standard monitor setup—an improvement of about 19%. The study reports successful outcomes in every case for both approaches, with no complications, and notes that the five surgeons involved preferred operating with the headset, citing lower physical and mental workload. Researchers also describe the Vision Pro as smaller and less expensive than the monitor-based arrangement it replaced. Both outlets emphasize that the study is small and preliminary, and the authors call for larger trials to confirm the findings.
